The day after the geek dinner Scott Hanselman and I sat down to chat about developing for Windows Media Center for Hanselminutes 82. The result is a pretty nice introduction to what you need for development, the tools included in the SDK, some of the samples which are included in the SDK and some basic beginner concepts. Here is a detailed list of links which corresponds to the various topics we covered during the podcast.

Is there any information available - in addition to the SDK, let's say a whitepaper - which summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of the different media center technologies (e.g. hostet html, mcpl, xbap).
I want to know which approach is best for developing MCE add-ins and what is its intended purpose (e.g. strength, weakness of each technologie).

The Windows Media Center Presentation Layer (Managed Code and / or MCML) should be your first choice. It's designed from the ground up for creating Media Center applications. HTML and XBAP are technologies designed for general purpose development so have quite a few tradeoffs if you pick them, especially in the remoting and remote controlled areas. The SDK has some information in the Choosing A Technology section if you want to drill down a bit more.

Thank you both for the great Podcast in reference to Hanselminutes 82 plus the associated reference links. It was very entertaining and provided good insight into developing for WCM.

hi! i stumbled across this blog whilst trying to fix a problem i am having with the Batch Encoder. i hope it's okay if i ask you a question (if not, just let me know!).

my problem/question is this: when attempting to encode mpeg2's with mpeg audio, the Batch Encoder seems to work only on XP Pro machines with the x64 upgrade, not just plain old XP Pro. i always get the error message: "Encoder Prepare - Object reference not set to an instance of an object". other filetypes present no problem. the mpegs i use are ripped with Mpeg Streamclip.

is this a codec issue? is there anything i can do to get it to work on my other machines? i would like to be able to have it running on multiple machines at the same time, to cut down on processing time.

thank you!
